President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's indifference toward agrarian reform has contributed to an increase in rural violence and to the criminalization of the Landless Workers' Movement (MST), specially now in Rio Grande do Sul, South Brazil, where landowners, public prosecutors, media and police joined forces to suppress the movement.
