In 1964, when a military coup takes place in Brazil, Gregorio Bezerra, a prominent Brazilian Communist leader, was captured and publicly tortured by Colonel Darcy Vilocq, who tied him, and dragged him through the streets with a rope in the neck. Beaten with iron bar, punches and kicks. Gregorio was burned with acid on the feet. That incident shocked public opinion and served as an example of how the new rule was to deal with insurrection.
