Just my two cents.
If the aim is to 'hunt down extremists', then he is going about it the wrong way. Warfare is not an effective way to stop extremism nor bring criminals to justice. And, if by chance it were effective, it would still be unacceptable because of the cost to the civilians in the region. Think of it this way: Would you have agreed if the government had decided to bomb Oklahoma to get Tim McVeigh?
The US _does not_ have the right of self defense if that is used to mean aggressive war on a country that _did not_ attack it. An extremist terrorist group attacked, and thus the US has the right to take multilateral police action against that group. It doesn't have the right to smash up a country with violence and warfare (after supporting a group there so vicious that the Taliban was welcomed with open arms).
If we do agree that the US does have the right to be taking military action in self defense, then just about every country south of the American border has the right to launch drone attacks on Washington.
Lastly, I have no doubt that Obama is doing it, as you say, "for a political reason".
